Editing workshop with Matt

Basics - picture sync

The rushes are where all the clips go and the first thing that needs to be done is syncing the rushes to the song.

The syncing is done by going into the black magic folder and you start off checking the number on the screen in the actual video recording and matching it with the number on the song sound. You can double check this at any point throughout the song by checking the words sync to the sound.

Lastly you double click the shot  and rename it to make it obvious which shot it is.

Sound sync

The first thing you need to do is find where the snare drum starts. You find this on your recorded footage and then find the exact same point on the editing side and drag the sound straight across.

Three key rules of editing

1. Listen to the music and illustrate what you here - if you start breaking up the song it allows you brain to think about what you actually hearing so you can focus on that. Quite often you don't notice the instruments in the background until you stop focusing on the lead singer.

2. Group your shots together - If you see a close up of a guitarist you must also show another shot of that guitarist, maybe a mid shot. This stops the video from looking like it's constantly moving all over the place.

3. Follow the movement - This is a very clever type of cut where one dance move is continued from one shot to the next. If you continue the same dance movements across two shots it can look very good if edited well.

Slogans for our set background

This is a list of slogans we have come up with regarding the idea of feminism as well as discriminatory things that men have said. We also asked girls what sort of things they had heard and what had been directed at them. We struggled with the font as there were really any on word that fit the style we wanted however the one that was most similar was called Viner Hand ITC. We want the main slogan to be in the middle and this is the first one on the list. We then want the others in a random order however the discriminatory ones said my men to be crossed out in a see through colour so they are still readable. The ones on this list in a larger font will be slightly larger than the rest with the main one being the biggest as it relates to our video as it is set in the 50s.

General feminist quotes

I’ve been to the 50’s and it SUCKED.

She’s beauty, she’s grace, she’ll punch you in the face.

Most women are one man away from welfare.

You don’t have to be anti-man to be pro-woman

We have dreams.

We are stronger than fear.

Little girls with dreams become women with vision.

I have a boyfriend

What part of NO don’t you understand?

We will Not be Silent

Ssssh, the men are talking

Women don't believe in politics

Discriminatory quotes often or specifically said by men

You alright darlin

Is it that time of the month?

Donald Trump – “Grab them by the pussy”

Risk assessment

Rope - tying someone up with a rope can always be risky as it could cause rope burn or possibly even slip upwards and go around their neck - We will overcome this by making sure the rope is secured around Amelie's waste on top of her clothes so their is no chance of rope burn.

Cables - There is always a risky of people tripping up over cabled on the floor - We will overcome this by trying to make sure the cables are out of the way at all times and make sure people are always aware.

Walls - Our set will be surrounded by four hand made - wooden walls designed specifically for our video. These could potentially fall over and cause some sort of damage - We will make sure the walls our strong and thoroughly supported so there is no chance of this happening.

Glass - There will be minimal glass used in our video however there will obviously be bulbs for the lights which good shatter at any point when the bulb goes. Not only is this a risk with glass on the floor but there wouldn't be any light as the bulb has gone - We will make sure to always have phones in our pockets as a backup torch as well as always wearing shoes so there is no chance of getting glass in our feet.

Our final cast list

Puppet master - Lee (drama teacher)

Initial digipack template idea

This could be a similar sort of album cover to the one we would make. It represents our band very well in terms of it being black and pink as well as having four band members, all female which again is the exact same as our band.

Pre production taks

We have continued to plan our sequence this week and will be speaking to the set designers about our ideas next week. We are still continuing to go with the female empowerment theme and the idea of the stereo typical role of male dominance being reversed.

Below our some pictures of similar ideas and some possible sets that we will want to try and replicate.
