Richard Dyer is a British media theorist who spoke about a 'stars' special place in the audiences' lives. He beleived that a stars image is "manufactured and artificial" and ever star has their own brand and USP in order to stand out from the rest and have a certain thing for us as an audience to love them for. This for example could be P1NKs hair or Michael Jacksons moonwalk.
He believed in 2 paradoxes -
- "A star is both ordinary and extraordinary" - This means that although a star can be just like the average person, ordinary they also have some sort of unique gift and are different in some sort of way. They are "the ideal version of a human".
- "A star is both present and absent" - This refers to the star alwasy being in our lives and not jsut face to face. They are now on social media and even things like clothes, we may dress like them or occasionally even try to identify as them. For example on the x-factor a woman once went on and called herself Beyoncé and even made herself look like Beyoncé. However they are also absent in that they are "always out of reach" and never actually around.
